Since the Co-op Connections Card Rx Healthy Savings discount began, cooperative members served by 500 participating Touchstone Energy cooperatives nationwide have saved more than $93 million, thanks to Touchstone’s agreement with pharmacy benefit manager New Benefits.

Locally, Cuivre River members have netted Rx savings of $576,000, which helped members  either save this amount or spend it elsewhere.

The card can be used at 60,000+ pharmacies in the U.S.

Q. How do I get an Rx discount?

A. Take your Co-op Connections Card with you to the pharmacy when you need to fill a prescription.  Show the card to the pharmacist, who will then use information on the back of the card to compute the price.

Expected discount savings should range from 10% - 85%. Savings vary with each prescription. You can expect to receive the highest savings on an established drug which offers a generic option.

When you present your Co-op Connections Card, the pharmacist puts the Card's Group and Member numbers into the pharmacy's computer system, along with the current retail price.  The computer sorts through the pharmacy’s various contracts and agreements and will confirm the amount the pharmacy has agreed to accept for a particular medication, as well as the price the member will need to pay at the time of purchase.  For example, if a pharmacy sells a generic drug for $4 but its Co-op Connections contracted rate is $7, the system will tell the pharmacist to charge $4. The consumer doesn’t know which discount program was used but is very happy with the result.

Q. Does Walmart still honor the card?

A. Yes. Some Cuivre River members have reported difficulty using the card at Walmart since January 1. New Benefits CEO Joel Ray recently stated, “Walmart and Sam’s Club stopped processing discount pharmacy cards for $4 and $10 generic prescriptions." While cooperative members have not historically received savings on these low cost prescriptions, the refusal to process the requests could give the impression that Walmart is no longer accepting discount pharmacy cards. "This is not accurate,” says Ray.  “Walmart is still a participating pharmacy in the discount network."

Additionally, from January 26 - 28, 2016 Walmart eliminated historical discount card information stored in patient files. Now members are asked to show their cards with every purchase, according to Ray. Combined, these two measures may have caused confusion or inconvenience during a visit to the pharmacy counter.

"We are grateful that local Walmart stores have helped promote Cuivre River’s Co-op Connections Card Rx discount," says Rod Smerkar, who coordinates Cuivre River's participation in the discount program. "We’ve received hundreds of calls from members who said, 'Walmart told me to contact you to get my card,'" he adds. "We appreciate the pharmacy looking out for the well-being of our members, and we look forward to a continuing partnership."

Q. How do I get a discount at Walmart?

A. Carry your Co-op Connections Card with you each time you visit the pharmacy.  It might also be beneficial to become familiar with Walmart's $4 and $10 generic program. As of press time, a list was available on the Walmart web site.

RX Discount Cards: What's In Your Wallet?

“I’ve been very impressed!” Those are the words of "Mike," a Cuivre River member who saved nearly 90% on a prescription by using the Co-op Connections Card at his local pharmacy. With those savings, it’s hard not to be impressed.

Mike of St. Charles County has prescription insurance coverage, but several medications were recently dropped. Lucky for Mike, his pharmacist was looking out for him and suggested he get a Co-op Connections Card to save money on his prescriptions. “It’s been a godsend since I can use the card for two medications I need to take,” says Mike.

One of Mike's prescriptions retails for $203.36. The Co-op Connections Card knocked the price down to $20.53!  His other drug costs $36.23 retail, but the discount card dropped the price to $12.01.

Before learning about Cuivre River's Rx discounts, Mike paid $20 to join a retailer’s “pharmacy savings club” and lowered his $203.36 prescription to $128.  He did save, but not as much as he does now.

Mike sums up his Co-op Connections Card Rx savings: “I’m really amazed at the savings.  I tell everyone I know about the program.”

We appreciate Mike’s story and kind words, and always welcome comments about how the card helps you save money.

Cuivre River members saved an average of 48.44% and a total of $556,923.16 on prescriptions through 2015 by presenting their Co-op Connections Cards to their pharmacist. Greatest savings can be expected on a drug which has a generic alternative. Savings may be lower on newer drugs without a generic alternative.

Want to check prices? Present your card to your pharmacist and nicely ask them to check the price, even if you have prescription insurance. Many are reluctant to ask. "We’ve heard of many cases where the Rx card price was actually lower than the price available through insurance coverage," says Rod Smerkar, who coordinates the program at Cuivre River. "Plus some insurance plans don’t cover certain types of drugs. You can use the Co-op Connections Rx Card like our friend Mike does," he adds. Mike saves more than $2,000 a year.

Families without prescription insurance will likely benefit the most. The card is not insurance, but it is an ongoing discount which can be used each time necessary medication needs to be refilled.

Medicare coverage is the top concern of many Cuivre River members, and their number one web search topic for the Co-op Connections Card program in 2014.

Touchstone Energy Cooperative, which operates the Co-op Connections program for Cuivre River and more than 450 electric cooperatives nationwide, added the online "Healthy Savings Medicare Assistant" just a few months ago.

Touchstone Energy’s Scott Bialick, who oversees the Connections Card program nationwide, says “Members have used the Medicare Assistant effectively to compare Medicare plans and to help choose the one that’s right for them.”

The Medicare Assistant joins other Healthy Savings discounts which are available to all members as a benefit of being a Cuivre River member and Co-op Connections Card holder. “We’re just looking out for our members and are pleased to offer ways for them to save money,” says Bialick.

Discounts are also available for prescription medicine, dental, vision, hearing, chiropractic and lab services.

The expected savings should average 10% - 85%, depending on the drug and if a generic version is available. Through mid 2014, Cuivre River members average savings of 46% per use.

Dental Discounts. Cardholders can expect to save 20% - 40% on select dental and orthodontic services from participating providers.

Hearing Discounts. Members can save 35% on hearing aids from Newport Audiology Centers, which offers 2,000+ locations nationwide.
