Dugans Rely On PQ+ To Protect Home & Family
Dave and Shirley Dugan of rural Moscow Mills are all about home and family. Between them they have 11 children, 37 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Two years ago, the family reunion drew a crowd of 81 relatives.
For 30 years the Dugans have called the Moscow Mills area "home." The extended Dugan family has three neighboring modular homes, and all have Power Quality Plus (PQ+) meter adapters that make "surge protection" part of the family's "home protection" plan.
Several years ago one of the homes suffered a lightning strike. “The surge nearly wiped out everything, including the TV, the microwave oven, the stereo, but didn’t get the refrigerator and the stove. We had to replace all of that," Dave says. "Fortunately I had insurance to cover it.”
“When I learned about Cuivre River's surge protection, I thought it would be a good investment. We haven’t lost anything else. We haven’t had any problems since then.” Meter adapters were installed in all three homes in April, 2006. The meter adapters' red indicator lights are still "on" and providing good protection.
Good word-of-mouth soon followed in family circles. “My niece’s home got hit by lightning, damaging nearly all of the kitchen appliances," says Shirley, now an enthusiastic PQ+ advocate. "She heard about what we had, and installed Power Quality Plus, too,” she adds. “Then, the neighbor across the street from my sister had a lightning strike that damaged kitchen appliances as well.” Soon after, the neighbor installed PQ+ surge protection.
Dave understands how important is is to protect electronic components. He works in the marine and locomotive diesel engine industry and rebuilds components for tugboats and locomotives. It’s fair to say he's familiar with the type of damage that can occur to equipment of all kinds.
“I’ve been asked at work about the surge stuff,” notes Dave. "People tell me they’ve lost this, they’ve lost that. I say, ‘hey, I’ve got this [surge protection] stuff on the meter.’ They've never heard of it.”
The Dugans have surge protection outdoors at the meter base, and indoors with plug-in surge protection for their home electronics. "No problems," says Dave. “It’s a no-brainer to have it installed. It costs me just $5.95/month and it’s cheap insurance.” And it's one more way he can protect the family from challenges brought on by a lightning strike.
After 15 years working with PQ+, Member Services Representative Bob Hysong says, “We’ve gained invaluable experience with surge protection equipment. We know the meter base devices have prevented damage, softened the blow of a lightning strike, and helped homeowners avoid filing insurance claims and paying deductibles."
"When people realize their homeowner's insurance may require them to pay a $1,000 out-of-pocket deductible if they file a claim for lightning damage, the concept and cost of surge protection makes a lot of sense,” he says. For a small monthly fee, they can prevent damage from most lightning surges. If damage occurs, it can be covered with no deductible by the TESCO product warranty.
There's no doubt that sensitive electronic components, TVs and entertainment systems have made consumers more vulnerable to lightning damage and more aware of the need to prevent it.
“I’ve lost count of the number of Cuivre River members who have told me about a new appliance, TV or computer they’ve just purchased and now want to protect from lightning,” says Hysong.
“Surge protection at the meter base offers the best front-end buffer from lightning’s effects. Plug-in surge suppression at the outlet has always been recommended, but is more important than ever to protect today's digital electronics,” he adds. His conclusion: An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure.
More than 1,700 Cuivre River members trust the meter base adapters to protect their homes from lightning damage; many have stories to tell. “Protecting your family, your home and the things you value. That's what this is all about.”
