Cuivre River Electric Cooperative. Power Quality Plus. Bob Hysong.Member Services Representative Bob Hysong reminds members that November storms may bring lightning strikes. Seasonal weather changes in fall and spring are the most vulnerable time for lightning strikes.


He's heard more than his share of lightning tales in his 17 years working with Cuivre River's Power Quality Plus (PQ+) surge protection program.  Testimonies about the damage lightning can cause to home appliances and family finances have made Hysong a natural advocate for the peace of mind PQ+ users report.


What is PQ+? It's the cooperative's optional surge protection program to aid homeowners by preventing lightning surges beyond the meter. Members can lease PQ+ meter base adapters to protect major electrical appliances for $5.95 per month (added to the electric bill), and purchase plug strips to protect sensitive electronics.


Major appliances generally include HVAC equipment, laundry equipment, refrigerators, stoves/ovens and water heaters. Sensitive electronic items include digital components and microprocessors, computers, entertainment equipment (TVs, DVRs) etc. Plug strips are available with electrical, telephone and coax cable protection.


"We know the meter base protection has helped prevent, slow down or stop lightning damage, and helped homeowners avoid paying homeowner's insurance deductibles," Hysong says.


"When people realize they have cost exposure (e.g., a $1,000 out-of-pocket deductible for traditional home insurance), surge protection makes more and more sense," he adds. "They can save immediately if damage occurs, or over time holding down the cost of their homeowner's insurance.”

Cuivre River Electric Power Quality Plus Mmebers John And Georgia Glidden.John and Georgia Glidden of rural O’Fallon are celebrating 10 years with Power Quality Plus (PQ+)surge protection this spring.


"It’s sort of an insurance policy,” Georgia says as she recalls how the PQ+ meter device they lease for $5.95 a month prevented damage to their electrical equipment when a lightning surge hit their meter.


“We apparently had a strike of some kind a few years ago.  Fortunately, it didn’t affect anything and the device served its purpose.  It protected the house and the things in it.  It certainly did its job,” noted John.


The Gliddens became interested in PQ+ when Georgia's cousin's Chesterfield home was struck by lightning three times in one summer. "While lightning didn’t destroy the house, it caused all kinds of quirky things to happen electrically in the home,” she says.


“We saw a story in the Current Times magazine about the surge protection program and became interested in it,” John says. In 2005 they received their initial PQ+ unit. It was automatically replaced following the 2012 lightning damage. A 10-year connected product warranty includes replacement if the device is damaged at the meter, as well as insurance for connected white goods if damage goes through the device and beyond the meter.


The warranty also includes the automatic replacement of the PQ+ meter device every 10 years.


The Gliddens agree that having PQ+ gives them peace of mind.  “You know it’s there, but you don’t think about it. It’s reassurance,” says John.


Member Services Representative Bob Hysong, who coordinates Cuivre River's PQ+ program, recommends PQ+ users check their surge protectors after a storm. "Check the two red lights on the device (see photo) to make sure they still glow red, especially after severe weather," says Bob. The first question he asks someone who suspects lightning came through their meter: "Are the lights still on?  If the red lights are still on, the surge protection device is still good to go.”


“If the lights are out, the device took a hit," he adds. "That’s a good time to call me so we can check and replace the device if needed," he adds. He'll help you get a warranty claim in progress if necessary. White goods — which include furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, clothes dryers and stoves — are automatically covered by the warranty. Sensitive electronics are included in the "connected product" warranty if they are connected to additional PQ+ brand plug-in surge suppressors at the outlet.


“Meter base surge protection is the best front-end buffer for lightning’s effects. Plug-in surge suppression at the outlet helps protect home electronics.” Hysong says undamaged white goods are the best testament to the success of the PQ+ program. Damage is rare.


As previously noted, to keep leased PQ+ units and the home equipment they protect under warranty, Cuivre River automatically replaces them after 10 years.  Nearly 200 devices approaching their 10-year mark are scheduled for replacement this year. "We want to make sure our members who rely on PQ+ continue to have 10-year connected product warranty coverage,'" says Hysong.


"When people realize how much financial exposure they may have with a lightning damage claim against their homeowner's insurance (e.g. $1,000 deductible), adding surge protection makes a lot of sense as it helps keep down their insurance costs,” he adds.


“After years of experience, we know the PQ+ meter base protection we’ve installed has slowed down or stopped lightning strikes, and helped homeowners avoid filing insurance claims and deductible payments,” he adds.


Members can lease PQ+ surge protection for $5.95/month, added to their monthly electric bill.


Members who enroll in PQ+  by May 29 will receive the first month of the lease free and be entered into a drawing for an 8-outlet multi-media plug-in surge suppressor ($70/value). There is no installation charge on a lease.

Why do I need extra surge protection?

Q. If Cuivre River has lightning arrestors and breakers on electric distribution lines, why do I need extra surge protection for my home appliances?

A. You are correct that a sophisticated network of protective devices on distribution lines help prevent a lightning or power surge from causing severe damage down line. However the voltage tolerance is much higher than many home appliances require.


Utility line equipment is very effective as front-line protection, but there are two primary reasons it may be wise to increase the surge protection at your home or business:


TESCO Meter base surge protector.(1) meter base and surge strip protection can help reduce incoming voltage to tolerable levels, and (2) lightning, not power lines, is the most common source of electrical surges; lightning can strike anywhere, and enter your home by many paths, including coax cables and phone lines.

A. Yes. Most importantly, a proper home ground wire is required at the meter base. We will not install the meter base surge protector if a building does not meet this criteria - period. There's no warranty protection if there's no ground wire.


Additionally, home electronics must be protected by a TESCO plug strip in addition to the meter base unit. Both devices must show evidence of surge damage to activate the warranty. Meter base damage must also be evident to activate the "white goods" warranty.



Q. Does surge protection prevent blinks or outages?

A. No. The equipment does not prevent blinks, outages, provide back-up power or prevent damage that could result from low voltage. It does help prevent damage from excessive voltage.


Q. What conditions cause power surges?

A. The majority of surges are caused by lightning. Now through November, and each spring (April, May), Missouri weather is likely to produce storms with damaging lightning. The more electronics we have, the more damage lightning can cause. Accidental damage to electric facilities, such as a vehicle accident that damages poles and power lines, can also result in a rare voltage surge.


Q. What does Power Quality Plus protection cost?

A. Residential meter base units can be leased for $5.95/month or purchased for less than $300; both include installation by a Cuivre River service crew.


TESCO outlet and plug strip prices range from $19 for a single plug up to $75 for a strip with muliple electrical outlets, telephone outlets and coax cable outlets. Hard-wired devices for telephone and coax cables are available for you to purchase and install for less than $75 each. Equipment for three-phase power is also available upon request for lease or purchase.
