PQ+ Means Reassurance, Insurance For The Gliddens
John and Georgia Glidden of rural O’Fallon are celebrating 10 years with Power Quality Plus (PQ+)surge protection this spring.
"It’s sort of an insurance policy,” Georgia says as she recalls how the PQ+ meter device they lease for $5.95 a month prevented damage to their electrical equipment when a lightning surge hit their meter.
“We apparently had a strike of some kind a few years ago. Fortunately, it didn’t affect anything and the device served its purpose. It protected the house and the things in it. It certainly did its job,” noted John.
The Gliddens became interested in PQ+ when Georgia's cousin's Chesterfield home was struck by lightning three times in one summer. "While lightning didn’t destroy the house, it caused all kinds of quirky things to happen electrically in the home,” she says.
“We saw a story in the Current Times magazine about the surge protection program and became interested in it,” John says. In 2005 they received their initial PQ+ unit. It was automatically replaced following the 2012 lightning damage. A 10-year connected product warranty includes replacement if the device is damaged at the meter, as well as insurance for connected white goods if damage goes through the device and beyond the meter.
The warranty also includes the automatic replacement of the PQ+ meter device every 10 years.
The Gliddens agree that having PQ+ gives them peace of mind. “You know it’s there, but you don’t think about it. It’s reassurance,” says John.
Member Services Representative Bob Hysong, who coordinates Cuivre River's PQ+ program, recommends PQ+ users check their surge protectors after a storm. "Check the two red lights on the device (see photo) to make sure they still glow red, especially after severe weather," says Bob. The first question he asks someone who suspects lightning came through their meter: "Are the lights still on? If the red lights are still on, the surge protection device is still good to go.”
“If the lights are out, the device took a hit," he adds. "That’s a good time to call me so we can check and replace the device if needed," he adds. He'll help you get a warranty claim in progress if necessary. White goods — which include furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, clothes dryers and stoves — are automatically covered by the warranty. Sensitive electronics are included in the "connected product" warranty if they are connected to additional PQ+ brand plug-in surge suppressors at the outlet.
“Meter base surge protection is the best front-end buffer for lightning’s effects. Plug-in surge suppression at the outlet helps protect home electronics.” Hysong says undamaged white goods are the best testament to the success of the PQ+ program. Damage is rare.
As previously noted, to keep leased PQ+ units and the home equipment they protect under warranty, Cuivre River automatically replaces them after 10 years. Nearly 200 devices approaching their 10-year mark are scheduled for replacement this year. "We want to make sure our members who rely on PQ+ continue to have 10-year connected product warranty coverage,'" says Hysong.
"When people realize how much financial exposure they may have with a lightning damage claim against their homeowner's insurance (e.g. $1,000 deductible), adding surge protection makes a lot of sense as it helps keep down their insurance costs,” he adds.
“After years of experience, we know the PQ+ meter base protection we’ve installed has slowed down or stopped lightning strikes, and helped homeowners avoid filing insurance claims and deductible payments,” he adds.
Members can lease PQ+ surge protection for $5.95/month, added to their monthly electric bill.
Members who enroll in PQ+ by May 29 will receive the first month of the lease free and be entered into a drawing for an 8-outlet multi-media plug-in surge suppressor ($70/value). There is no installation charge on a lease.
